Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto, located on the northern coast of the island of Tenerife, represents an old colonial settlement where tourists from all over Europe flock to escape the winter. Its beaches represent vast stretches of thick sand, bathed in flawless sunshine and washed by an invariably warm turquoise sea. The site attracts almost a million visitors annually with its cobblestone streets, small fishermen's wharf, plus a multitude of leafy gardens and shady squares. The majority of the old houses here have traditional Canarian balconies. The port of Puerto de la Cruz is the major wine export centre of the island, and is still filled with traditional fishing boats. Nevertheless, Puerto has succumbed to its commercial side, with tourist paraphernalia and various merchandise flooding the place due to its status as a free port. In the livelier part of town, Chinese street vendors are a frequent sight.
