The town dates back to the rule of Henry the Navigator, when it primarily served as an immense wharf and grounds for the Portuguese to indulge in some battles for territorial domination. A former capital of the Algarve, Lagos contains the remains of a Medieval fortress, as well as various memorabilia related to its historic past. Adorned with the strategic Bay of Sagres, this port town saw its heyday during the era of Admiral Nelson, when it was largely frequented by sailors from around the globe and sported a vivid nightlife scene. Today, Lagos still takes pride in its dining and drinking options, though its tumultuous days are long gone. The town has a myriad of tiny lanes and a traditional flea market, and the sunny coastline is dominated by rocky cliffs with sandy beach areas. Lagos has laid-back charm, allowing for many lazy days in the sunshine.
