Lisbon Coast

This area is probably the most important tourist hub in the entire country. Costa de Lisboa has seen relentless commercialisation over the past few decades, dramatically changing from a laid-back piece of empty land into a bustling beach area. Starting north of Lisbon at Ericeira and stretching up to Abrantes to the east, it also encompasses Vila Franca de Xira, as well as the inland areas of Alcácer do Sal and Grândola, plus the coastal town of Porto Covo. Apart from Lisbon, the area includes Setubal, Sintra, Mafra, Estoril and Sesimbra, most of them being equipped with excellent sandy beaches and lots of sunshine. This part of the coastline is also known for its great surfing and windsurfing conditions, although its fame as a family resort has somewhat prevailed over its image of a place for the younger crowds to meet. Otherwise, the scenic traditional houses, serene ports and colourful fishmarkets are invariably rewarding. The area is particularly rich in horticultural products and vineyards.
