www.europe-seaside.com - Palermo

Palermo is the main city in Sicily, picturesquely situated in its own bay at the foot of majestic Mount Pellegrino. It's an amazing mix of a modern seaside resort, bustling city and ancient town. This is one of the hottest spots in Italy, with high temperatures during all seasons, often exceeding 40C in July and August. The water is warm from May to October, but the rest of the year is also a good time for watersports.

Palermo is a much-loved seaside holiday destination, dominated by Italian families in the high season, when the city's beaches often get crowded. The most popular beach area is Mondello, with its wide public beach, providing good facilities and remarkable seafood restaurants. The other beaches in and around Palermo are Addaura, Barcarello, Vergine Maria, Arenella and Romagnolo. They're quite diverse, and will suit every taste. Because of the heat and crowds in the summertime, sunbathing in May, June and September is a good idea.

Palermo is renowned for its unique architectural heritage. There are numerous examples of both Arabic and Viking architecture styles. The most famous sites are the Cathedral, the Church of Jesus and Palazzo dei Normanni. Teatro Massimo is also worth a visit, since it's the third-largest opera house in the world.
